The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) Chinese is an important assessment for Primary 6 students in Singapore. Paper 2

Paper 2 carries the highest PSLE Chinese weightage, accounting for 90 marks (45% of the total score). In this exam, there are two booklets: Booklet A and Booklet B. Booklet A consists mostly of multiple-choice questions that test students’ basic knowledge of the Chinese language, while Booklet B assesses reading comprehension through fill-in-the-blanks and question-and-answer formats. Students will be graded based on their accuracy in answering the questions, which reflects their ability to comprehend Chinese texts. They are not allowed to use a dictionary for this paper.

Paper 3

Paper 3 is the final paper in the PSLE Chinese subject and tests students’ oral and listening comprehension skills. This paper contributes a total of 70 marks (35%) – 50 marks from the oral test and 20 marks from the listening test). For the oral exam, students will be assessed on how clearly and expressively they can narrate a passage. They will also be asked to watch a short video clip and answer questions about it verbally.

In the listening portion of Paper 3, students will listen to audio recordings such as dialogues, announcements, and advertisements, then answer multiple-choice questions based on what they have heard. The total exam time for Paper 3 is 40 minutes, with 30 minutes for the oral part and 10 minutes for the listening part.

When preparing for the PSLE Chinese, students aim to achieve AL1, the highest grade, with a score≥90. Here are some tips on what your child can prioritise when preparing for the exam based on PSLE Chinese weightage, starting with the most essential.

1. Reading Comprehension and Oral Communication

Paper 2 makes up the largest portion of the PSLE Chinese weightage-45%. Make sure this is where most of the students’ preparation time goes. Aside from practicing reading comprehension, students should make a habit of reading more Chinese texts, such as newspaper articles or storybooks. They can actively list unfamiliar words and find their meanings to enrich their vocabulary. Top AL1 learners also pay special attention to comprehension open-ended questions, as they may carry more marks than multiple-choice ones.

For the oral component, consider it as students’ “low-hanging fruit.” This is where your child can quickly earn marks, as it carries a quarter of the PSLE Chinese weightage and requires no handwriting. To prepare more effectively, students can also practise with common PSLE Chinese oral topics so they become more familiar with the types of questions and discussion themes that may appear during the exam. Your child can practise reading aloud daily, with proper intonation and pauses. For the conversation part, students should focus not just on stating their opinion, but also on providing a reason and an example to earn higher scores.

2. Composition

Instead of just practising writing standard essays, practise writing from different angles, such as a happy story, a sad story, and a problem-solving story. 3. Listening

The listening portion of the exam carries the least weightage in PSLE Chinese, but AL1 students do not ignore it until the last week.
