Common PSLE Chinese Oral Topics and How to Prepare

The PSLE Chinese examination is often a subject many students feel anxious about, especially when it comes to the Oral component. Some students feel anxious about having their speaking and fluency graded, while others may struggle with finding the right words to answer the given questions. The good news is that proper preparation can boost students’ confidence in the oral exam.

Why Students Should Prepare By Topic

The PSLE Chinese exam does not solely test students’ ability to read aloud, but also hones their speaking proficiency and language fluency, allowing them to confidently converse in daily interactions. It also teaches the importance of active listening, critical thinking, and expressing oneself clearly and concisely to convey their intended message. Good communication is central to many things in life.

As the oral component is only one part of the overall examination, students should also understand the PSLE Chinese weightage and scoring to see how each component contributes to their final result.

As such, the oral exam covers a range of topics, from environmental issues to social responsibility. This diversity aims to encourage students to learn more about the world around them and subsequently organise their thoughts in a clear and concise manner. Students should view them as learning opportunities, providing a window to new insights and understandings behind familiar and unfamiliar subjects. From there, they can articulate their thoughts to provide detailed answers that showcase their understanding of the questions.

Preparing students by topic allows them to gain deeper insights that help them organise and articulate their thoughts more systematically. They can allocate sufficient time per topic to parse available information, organise their thoughts, and provide a suitable answer. With consistent practice, students can incorporate verbal and non-verbal communication to demonstrate their reasoning, make reasonable comparisons and connections between various points, and employ their critical thinking skills to deliver coherent, in-depth answers to each question.

Common PSLE Chinese Oral Topics

Most topics are aimed at expressing a student’s opinions, sharing suggestions, describing real-life scenarios, or sharing personal stories. Common themes tend to include the following categories:

The Environment & Public Responsibility (环境保护与公共责任)

In some ways, the PSLE Chinese exam teaches students about civic-mindedness, especially questions that touch on their role towards the environment and public responsibility.

Technology & Digital Lifestyle (科技与数码生活)

Questions on this topic may quiz students on what it means to be a responsible user of current and emerging technologies. Students may be asked to discern the pros and cons of our growing digital-focused lifestyle.

Health & Lifestyle (健康与生活方式)

Students can also be asked about what it means to live a healthy life, and what efforts they can make to enjoy a meaningful quality of life. It may also focus on the importance of mental health.

Relationships & Community (人际关系与社区)

Students may often communicate with many people in Chinese, including family members, relatives, teachers, peers, and those within their local community. The oral exam may ask them to reflect on how they build and maintain these connections.

School & Personal Development (学校生活与个人成长)

School and self-actualisation often go hand in hand, as they support not just a student’s education, but also help them find and work towards their true potential.

Culture & Celebrations (文化与节庆)

Singapore’s cultural diversity is also a learning experience for students, especially when cultural celebrations and exchanges demonstrate the unity and fellowship of the nation’s people.

Animals & Responsible Ownership (动物与负责任饲养)

Empathy towards pets is also a topic worth exploring, as how one treats animals may often reflect who they are as a person.

Common PSLE Chinese Oral Questions

PSLE Chinese oral questions typically take on any of the following three styles.

Descriptive Questions

  • Describe the visual you see (描述类问题).

Descriptive questions typically focus on how well a student can describe what they are presented with. They may need to use more specific vocabulary instead of using broad, general terms, enabling them to accurately convey what they are asked to describe. Students may also need to structure their answer correctly to ensure the description is logical, valid, and gets to the point.

Opinion Questions

  • Should younger children be limited to shorter digital screen time? (意见类问题)

These questions want students to express their opinion about a specific topic. Students will share points that describe their position, backed up by reasoning that is supported by concrete evidence. This evidence may come from personal experience or from the news or other trustworthy sources (such as government agencies), which provides necessary context to answer the question. Students may also need to acknowledge other viewpoints on the subject, if necessary.

Experiential Questions

  • What are your most and least favourite foods? (个人经历类问题)

This is primarily based on what the student has personally experienced in their life. When answering such questions, students must connect the question to this personal experience and reflect upon what they may have learned from it. If a student has not experienced the scenario in question, they may need to acknowledge their lack of experience and draw on their understanding of what they might do, how they feel about it, and so on.

A Simple Structure to Answer PSLE Chinese Oral Questions

The PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) method provides a simple structure that students can use to answer the PSLE Chinese oral questions with confidence.

Point

Students should start with a clear introductory sentence that establishes what they will discuss in their answer. This point should directly address the question being asked.

Evidence

Students should back up their point with meaningful examples or evidence, which may stem from personal experience or from trusted, verifiable sources. Strong evidence with sufficient authority helps to reinforce the point being made.

Explanation

Here, students should explain how the evidence supports their point by providing additional and relevant context. The information provided is what will persuasively answer the question by convincing the examiner(s) that the point is logical and well-reasoned.

Link

Lastly, students should link this point to the next point they will make (which could be the next question), or link it back to the main point.

The 5W1H Approach

Alternatively, students may also use the 5W’s and 1H to gain contextual clues to help them answer questions.

  • Who are the main characters or people in the provided media? Students may need to describe their salient features (such as their age and appearance).
  • What is happening in the provided media? Are people doing specific activities? What types of objects are present?
  • Where is the setting/location? Again, students must be specific, such as specifying whether it is an indoor or outdoor activity.
  • When did this happen? Point out anything that tells the time (including season).
  • Why is this happening? Students should be able to give reasonable explanations as to why the depicted activity is taking place, what caused it, and so forth.
  • How is this happening? Describe what is going on as clearly as possible, such as the manner in which people are conducting the depicted activity.
